Monterey Bay: California Coastal Commission

This year, the California Coastal Commission celebrates 50 years of protecting one of the most extraordinary coastlines in the world—and Swim California is honored to celebrate alongside them.

As I swim the entire California coastline, from Oregon to Mexico, I’m experiencing firsthand what makes this coast so worth protecting: its incredible biodiversity, iconic landscapes, vibrant communities, and the people whose lives are deeply connected to the ocean.

The Coastal Commission’s 50th anniversary is a moment to celebrate how far we’ve come—and to look ahead at the work still needed to ensure California’s coast remains accessible, healthy, and thriving for generations to come.

Swim California is about more than swimming 900 miles. It’s about connecting people to this coastline, telling its stories, and celebrating the people and organizations working every day to protect it.

Here’s to 50 years of coastal protection—and to the next 50.
